SESAME PLANT (Sesamum indicum )

Sesamum indicum is widely naturalized in tropical regions around the world and is cultivated for its edible seeds, which grow in pods.

Sesame, has long been grown as an oil-crop in East Asia and Africa. It is believed that sesame is among the oldest cultivated oil seed crops. The seed of the sesame plant are small, with numerous varieties, seeds are of different sizes, forms, and colours. Basically, the seeds are about 3 to 4 mm long by 2 mm wide and 1 mm thick, endowed with energy and it is vitamin-rich, containing protein, magnesium, potassium, vitamins B and E as well as calcium.

Sesame is an annual plant growing up to 50 - 100 cm, The leaves of the plant are simple, arranged alternately in sequence. Sesame varieties can adapt to many soil types, though the high-yielding crops thrive best on well-drained, fertile soils of medium texture and neutral pH. However, it has low tolerance for soils with high salt and water-logged conditions. Although it drought-tolerant, due to its extensive root system, sesame requires enough water during germination. It takes 100-135 days to reach maturity. 

PLANTING PERIOD

Sesame is cultivated in different ecological zones in Nigeria and hence the suitable period for each zone is stated below;

Guinea savanna: Early planting is by March/April, Late planting is by mid-July/August. 

Sudan Savanna: Planting should be conducted as from the last week of June to first week of July.

Sahel Savanna: Planting should be conducted by the first rain which usually occurs between June and July.
