OYSTER MUSHROOM (Pleurotus ostreatus),GOOD FOR YOU.


The oyster mushroom is one of those varieties of mushroom that are edible and industrially relevant for mycorestoration Purpose.though it's from the wild, oyster mushroom can be cultivated on straws and other media.
The oyster mushroom derived it's name Pleurotus ostreatus basically from the pattern and shape of the fungus. Pleurotus (Latin) is as a result of the sideway growth system of the stem, while ostreatus which in English oyster, refer to the shape of the cap. Similarly, many believes the name is as a result of the resemblance of the flavor to the oyster.

FACTS ABOUT OYSTER MUSHROOM

1. They are fungus.
2. Naturally,they are found on dead decaying hardwood.
3. It has unique scent.
4. It feed on mainly dead decaying woody matters.
5. It is one of the few carnivorous mushroom;the mycelia is capable of killing and eating small roundworm (nematodes).
6. It can be white, yellow, brown or even pink.
7. The cap rolls into convex shape when it's young,and flatten out and turn up as it get older.
8. China produces more than 85% of the world’s Oyster mushrooms.


NUTRITIONAL / MEDICAL VALUE OF OYSTER MUSHROOM.
Oyster mushrooms contain an antioxidant called ergothioneine, which decreases inflammation in the body. Currently, researchers concluded that ergothioneine can reduce chances of cardiovascular disease by preventing plaque build-up in the arteries. Oyster mushrooms are also vital sources of protein, fiber, postassium, vitamin B6 and folate. One cup of Oyster mushrooms is about 4% of the daily requirement for vitamin D.
oyster mushrooms contain significant amount of zinc, iron, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin C, folic acid, niacin, and vitamins B-1 and B-2. According to the publication made by "Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry" in 1997, oyster mushrooms was said to have a significant antibacterial activity, the study pointed out that the active compound benzaldehyde reduces bacterial levels. Similarly, oyster mushroom is said to contain significant antioxidant properties that protect cells in the body.
