MIND OVER MATTERS. By : QUAINOO JEMIMAH

A wise man once said that where you get to in life is ruled by what you think. What we think is what we get.
The mind of a human is a very powerful thing and it does not just dictate your present, it also dictates your future. What you think is what you are and who you are. Now I would say that the major difference between a poor man and a successful man is their mind set. Where a rich man will look at a waste land and see fortune and opportunities, another man will see a waste land.

I was speaking to a person some weeks ago who looked at my FCAIB (FEDERAL COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE IBADAN) Tee shirt and was like 'wow are you studying Agric?' and I was like 'yes' because I am actually a student of Agricultural extension and the man looked at me strange and shook his head. This is the kind of mindset that is affecting the growth in this nation. Our perspective is one of the things that has contributed to the slow growth and advancement of agriculture in Nigeria.

Nigeria used to be known as one of the top agriculture producing countries not just in Africa but in the world some twenty, thirty years ago. We used to be known for our cocoa, cassava, oil palm and more but now we have fallen so low down the chain because our mindset changed and we began to see Agriculture as work that is outdated, we began to see it as something shameful, something that only old men in the village can do. One part of our minds got civilized while the other part stayed stunted. All we saw was the dirt and not the produce. We didn't think of how important food was to man or how that 'Doctor' or 'Lawyer' would survive without the old man breaking his back in the village to produce food.

Generally, our perspective of agriculture has changed in recent years but it still needs a lot of work. We have just passed that stage where as a youth once you announce you are studying Agric your whole family begins to look down on you and in some rare cases even disown such a child but that was then. Now it’s better but people still see agric as too much hard work and less pay. I have to say that it is surely hard work but just like every other kind of business or work, you have to wait for it to grow.

There has obviously been a boom in agricultural production over recent years but it is nothing compared to the improvements we can see in other areas of businesses such as real estate. Nigeria can never have too  man farmers, farms or agriculturists because being the giant of Africa, it has a large number of people to feed both inside and outside the country (by means of exporting). Agriculture is not just the future of this nation but the future of the world. It is high time we begin to change the way we think for there is more than meets the eye to  the extents we can reach if we invest greatly in agric. Yes it is hard work but it is a gold mine that has been discovered but is yet to be fully mined. To get that beautiful piece of  jewelry from raw gold takes a long and grulous process and so also it will take to get the beauty and riches out of agriculture. Mining and refining gold is dirty work but we don't condemn it so why then do we look down on farmers and agriculture? Hmmm a question you should consider very well.

Nigeria is a country blessed in every way possible with natural, mineral and human resources. All we need is change the way we think to make the progress we deserve.
